Fast talking con-man, E.L. "Tenspeed" Turner (Ben Vereen) is a master of disguise who hooks up with Lionel Whitney (Jeff Goldblum), a "brown shoe" (accountant). Whitney is a straight arrow suburban professional who just happens to have a black-belt in Karate and was an Olympic Games pistol shooting competitor.

Through an unlikely series of circumstances, they form a mismatched buddy private detective team. Tenspeed is the realist, while Lionel fantasizes about having adventures like the fictional private eye he idolizes, Mark Savage.
