William Katt plays Ralph Hinkley, an earnest high school teacher who is presented with an unusual red flying suit with super powers from extraterrestrials. Among the capabilities the suit provides him are to become invisible, have holographic vision and the ability to fly.

In spite of the fact that he promptly manages to lose the suit's operations manual, he is reluctantly pressed into service as a crime fighter by Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp), an overly enthusiastic FBI agent whose often outrageous plans always mean trouble in the action/adventure/comedy series.
